The post natal period is a time in which there is significant emotional, hormonal and physical stress on the body. Often pain remains present particularly if the strains of labour remain unresolved. If labour was difficult and/or the use of intervention such as forceps, vacuum or caesarean occurred, pain may persist. An osteopathic consultation in the early postnatal weeks can help to reduce the influence of these stressors, by helping to restore and maintain joint mobility, and improve blood flow and lymphatic drainage. It can also help to suppress an over stimulated nervous system, allowing the patient to relax and enjoy the bonding time with the baby.
The general day to day care of a newborn also places enormous strain on various parts of the body.
Whether it be aches and pains the in the neck and upper spine from poor posture when breast/bottle feeding , or pain in the lower back from carrying the newborn, lifting the capsule/pram and bending over the cot, your osteopath will be able to assess and positively manage this.
